In the offline world, we have rules for design that make common spaces safer for children: height limits on playground equipment, doors wide enough for wheelchairs, regulations on lead paint. It’s about time we made some rules for common digital spaces, too!
THE ISSUE Increases time on a platform; excessive time on screens linked to mental health challenges, physical risks including less sleep; promotes family conflict/battles over turning off.
THE FIX Autoplay on children’s videos or content should be off by default, making it easier for children to put devices down and adults to enforce limits.
